about amani
Amani Mamas Initiative (AMI) is a registered Community-Based Organization dedicated to improving maternal and newborn health outcomes in underserved communities of Kampala and beyond. Operating through its clinic, Amani Family Centre in Project Village, AMI provides free antenatal care, safe delivery services, postnatal care, family planning, vaccination, and maternal health education to vulnerable women living in urban informal settlements ok Kanyogoga. Since 2017, the Centre has supported over 3,000 mothers and maintained a 100% live birth rate for mothers who deliver at the facility, demonstrating its commitment to reducing maternal and infant mortality.
AMI was established in response to the barriers faced by underprivileged women in accessing safe, respectful, and affordable maternal healthcare. The name “Amani” means peace in Swahili, reflecting the CBO’s mission to restore dignity, safety, and hope to mothers regardless of income, tribe, religion, or circumstance. Beyond Kampala, AMI conducts periodic outreach missions in Apac District, Arua refugee settlements, and island communities on Lake Victoria, offering free antenatal care, Mama Kits, health education, and screening services. AMI works closely with local health facilities, the Community Development Office, religious leaders, police (particularly in cases of sexual assault), and partner NGOs to strengthen referrals, protection, and community support.
